The following item from the Salina Sun of November 24 will be of interest to Reaper readers.
Ole Peter Borg, a resident of Salina for the past fifteen years, and who helped "blaze the trails" of Sevier County and southern Utah as one of the early pioneers, is dead at the age of 86 years. Mr. Borg passed away at the home of his son, J.A. Borg, last friday evening at 7 o'clock, death resulting from infirmities incident to old age. Death was expected, as the faithful old pioneer lay in a state of coma for three days, and members of the family were grouped at the bedside when the end came peacefully.
Mr. Borg was born at Lingby Sweden, October19,1847, the son of Peter Hansen and Ingra Jensen Borg. He came to America at the age 17 and joined his parents at Mt. Pleasant. Later he moved to Richfield, Where he made his home until 15 years ago, when he came to Salina. While residing in Richfield, and during the Indian troubles, he supervised flour mills, while the older settlers were out battling the Indians. He took up the harness business, mastering the art of making high - class harness. He had the distinction of erecting the first business house on Main street in Richfield, and he helped to build the first canal that carried water to the fields and homes in and around Richfield.
He was devoted to his religious belief and served as president of the elders quorum for many years. He was kind, loved his home and neighbors, and was always regarded as one of the stalwart leaders and citizens.
He was the father of 20 children, eleven of whom survive: Five daughters, Mrs. Nelson Baker, Salt Lake; Mrs. W. S. Young, Helena, Mont.; Mrs. Adolph Nielson, Richfield; Mrs. E.S. Wilkinson, Redondo Beach, Calif.; Miss Edna Borg, Los Angeles; Six sons, Alma Borg, Nampa, Idaho; J.A. Borg, Salina; D.E. Borg, Gunnison; Eugene Borg, Helena, Mont.; H.E. Borg, Bozeman, Mont.; A.F. Borg Sigurd. One Brother, James Borg, Salt Lake, and 54 grandchildren also survive.
Simple, but impressive funeral services were held for mr. Borg at 1 a'clock Monday at the First Ward chapel, with Bishop T.L. Black officiating. G.W. Coons of Richfield was the principal speaker.
Following the services in Salina, all that was mortal of Ole Peter Borg was taken to Richfield and placed in the family burial plot.
Due to the fact that some of the sons and daughters live at distant points only three sons, J.A. Borg of Salina, D.E. Borg of Gunnison and A.F. Borg of Sigurd, were present at the funeral.

Facts regarding Lars P. Borg

Great-Great Uncle Lars P. Borg was a harness maker and he had a Harness and Leather Shop at 552 South First East St.,Salt Lake City between 1875 and 1887. During this time period his wife,Mrs. Annie S. Borg & Mrs. Emma Smith Borg, Had a Mercantile Store at 558 South First East St., Salt Lake City, Ut. Around 1887 Lars moved his Harness & Leather Shop to 978 E. Fourth So. St and opened his dairy at So. State Road., 1/4 mile South of S.L.C., Utah. Records show that Lars and His son Louis P Borg was running the dairy in 1890.

Lars P. Borg Passed on 4 January 1904, age 70 at his dairy, 3112 South State, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah.

Lars P. Borg came to America in 1860 Traveling from Sweden to England, And leaving England 11 May 1860 aboard the William Tapscott to America.

A Chinaman, called Tom, had a vegetable garden which was located from Third East to State Street, and covered a large area of the land in the Liberty Ward. Alfred Best purchased a fifty-acre farm bordering Murphy's Lane on the south and extending from Ninth to Eleventh East. The Sprowl and Borg families had dairies. They lived on State Street and pastured their cows along the creek banks. They sent wagonloads of milk into the city to serve hotels, eating houses, and the city residents.

Lars Peter Borg was Baptized by Jens Jenson on 20 Aug 1857. He was a local missionary in Sweden until he emigrated to Utah in 1860. Then in July1869- 15 Jul 1871 he served as Traveling Elder in Norway and later in the Skane Conference, Sweden. Lars returned to Salt Lake City, UT and continued the harness and sadle making trade.

Living History (re: Daniel and Hans Borg)

It was April 27, 1916, and a crime was being committed in Richfield. City Marshal Dan Borg had been apprised of the development and he deputized his brother, Hans Borg, to assist him in detecting the act and arresting the perpetrators.

The two sworn officers, together with W.A. Cheel and a man named Anderson, assembled at dusk and proceeded cautiously toward a cabin owned by Cheel and rented to Clara McCabe, lately arrived from the mining camp at Marysvale. At 9:30 p.m. they positioned themselves under the window sills and listened for an opportune moment to enter. Two hours passed as the posse members bided their time, listening to the inside conversation and occasionally taking furtive peeks through the windows.

Finally, at 11:30 p.m., sounds from within assured the lawmen that criminal activity was in progress. With a single kick, Dan Borg broke open the flimsy cabin door and burst inside, followed closely by Hans Borg. Dan struck a match, illuminating the darkened room and its occupants for a brief moment, then the flicker of his match light was answered by two revolver shots.

Hans screamed in pain, his left wrist shattered and his abdomen pierced by bullets. The brothers fled from the cabin. Its door was slammed shut and barricaded from inside as the posse retreated down the narrow dirt lane.

The three men laid Hans on the ground, where he writhed in pain. Dan stayed with his brother while Cheel and Anderson went for a doctor
and the county sheriff, the situation having become too much for the marshal to handle alone. Hans Borg was carried to his home for emergency treatment, then rushed to Salina for surgery. Despite the severity of his abdominal wound, he would recover.

Dan Borg, with Sheriff C.A. Leavitt, returned to the cabin, again dark and silent. Leavitt identified himself in a loud voice and demanded that those inside surrender. After speaking back and forth through the closed door, those within became convinced of the lawman's identity, then opened the door and were peacefully arrested.

They were Clara McCabe, wife of M.J. McCabe, of Marysvale, and Albert Williams, a "quiet, inoffensive man" according to the Richfield press. Williams was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to commit murder. The couple also received a charge for the crime that had brought the posse to eavesdrop through windows and wait in the chilly darkness for hours: adultery.

The record does not indicate the outcome of the adultery case (although the couple had been fined a month earlier for committing the same act in Marysvale -- a surprising occurrence, perhaps, since the number of saloons and saloon girls in Marysvale at that date far surpassed the number of churches and churchgoers).

Williams was convicted of the assault charge, despite his defense that the lawmen had not identified themselves when breaking violently into the cabin in the dead of night; he contended the arrest was therefore illegal, and that he had fired in self-defense. He appealed to the Utah Supreme Court, which upheld his conviction. Because Williams was knowingly engaged in a crime, the court reasoned, he should have anticipated the arrival of the law and submitted.

Williams was sentenced to an indeterminate term in the state penitentiary.

Two years later he sought a pardon, maintaining that his was a crime of circumstance that would not be repeated. He promised to leave Utah to live with his mother in California. His petition was supported by letters from many who had known him in Marysvale, from the Mormon bishop to the roasters at the alunite mines. One mine supervisor offered him a job. The Marysvale town marshal vouched for his good character. Ordinary citizens complained that he had been treated unfairly.

Williams was released, and, like Clara McCabe, disappeared into the backdrop of a changing American society.

My dad had a daughter from his first marriage. I met her when I was very young and she lived with us for about 6 months. Her name is Donna L Borg and she was born sometime in the mid 1930's. I continue to search for more information on Donna and would appreciate any help. Donna could have gone by the last name of Borg, Shaw, or Bell.
